Hi,

I'm from Belgium searching for some information about volvo engines in a suzuki samurai.

First of all I would like to know what engine and in what volvo-model they put it.

second I would like to know what kind of gearbox and what Transfercase you can/should use?

kind regards

G

many configurations have been used, but i i'm quite sure I have seen the (belgium-made?) Volvo 340/360 engine in samurais.
You will have too make new engine mounts anyway so mostly anything goes as long as it is not too long, and not too wide.
Most people put the Volvo gearbox in there and use the suzuki transfer case.

thanks for the response.

I've been searching a bit more info. What I found is that the 2300cc turbo engine from the 740/745 should fit.
is that the same engine you're talking about?

thanks

No, the engine from the 340/360 is 2.0L B19 i think. I vould use the 2,3l turbo and a 4 speed volvo M45. The B230 ET from 85-88 740 puts out 182 HP with the org. intercooler...fuel injektion. The M46 Overdrive gearox usually delivered in these models wil not fit in the suzuki. It's too long.
Bare en haug med deler igjen.....

The M45 gearbox is also the strongest one. It can handle much mote torque/power than the other gearboxes. It's the cheapest gearbox to buy too.

The most common engine mounted in the Volvo 340 cars is a Renault engine called B14 in the "Volvo language". This engine I would NOT consider putting in my Sammy.

But some 340s were equipped with the B19 engine as Massey told you. The 360 was delivered up to 1985 with the B19. These engines may also be found in Volvo 240 from 1977 to 1985. But the Volvo 240 is also delivered with B21 and B23 engines.

The B19 (1986CCM), B21 (2096CCM)and B23 (2312CCM) is the same engine but with different sized pistons.
These engines is at least in Norway very easy to find and cheap too... Equipped in 240 in the same years exept the B21 that was delivered from 1975 to 1985.

If you want your engine to run on unleaded fuel you must choose the B200 or B230 (1986 to 1993 I think). They are delivered in Volvo 240, 360 and 740.

If you are lucky you can find a Volvo 740 or 940 with the B234 engine who has a 16 Valve Cylinder head.

In this text I have consentrated on the conventional engines (Without turbo) as the turbo engines will in my opinion provide you more trouble and hard work than pleasure.

If you have more questions just ask!

Thanks for the info.

A quick search in belgium and it seems to me that a B230 is easy to find. If 'm lucky I can find a B234.
Only thing is the gearbox you said, the 4-speed is a bit harder to find. But maybe some scrapyard can have it. and otherwise, I plan a trip to Norway biggrin.gif

thanks guys.

If you take a gearbox from a B230FT fitted to Volvo 240 ,,they are shorter even with overdrive.

If yoy are going to buy a B200 or B230 engine, buy a -88b or larter engine. That will say that the engine is from last in 1988 and later. Because this engine is stronger. The B230FK is a very god engine biggrin.gif The gearbox in 740 whit B230ET is in aluminium(is it cald that in english?), so it is a litle lighter. If tou want to go a step further, and if it is place, you can youse the 5 cylinder engine from 850. A gerbox cald M90 is the strongest. I don't know if they fit yor car. The 5 cylider engine is cald B5202, B5204, B5234, B5254... B=gasolin(bensin in norwegian), first number= number of cylinders, 2.and3. number=engine size ex 23=2,3l, last number= number of valvs at each cylinder. I hope you understand what I ment, I'm not very good in english... sad.gif Sorry sad.gif

I understood eveything what you said.

About the 5 cilinder engines. They are too long for what I want to do with it. Plan is to place my radiator at the rear and put a winch on the chassis.so I need some space.

If I can find a four cilinder it is ok and they are strong enough. Any powerrange above the 100bhp is fine. that's at least 40horses more then I have now. devil.gif

The 360 also came with a b2600e engine, 120 bhp. I had one, that went 400 000 km before I sold it.
Ja takk, begge deler!

B23E is also a very good engine, about 136hk. If you change the camshaft, and make som adjustments, you have around 180hk whistle.gif
