Sorry I cannot speak to you in at least one word of Norwegian I do not know one word..... but I will do my best to learn.
Anyway, I am a keen off-roader from the UK and am looking to come to Norway for a holiday/adventure.
I'd like to do a off-roading tour of your stunning country, taking in the Fjords and embracing the culture.
I have heard off-roading or green laning as we sometimes call it is illegal in Norway, can anyone confirm this?
I wish to come over for a 2 week holiday in the summer and tour the country, how much of the country can we see from off the road, or is this not possible?
Thanks for taking the time to read my post.....
Hope to hear from you all soon....
Speak soon,
Shaun

Hi Shaun
I dont know about any locations where you can go offroad, legally, and at the same time explore the country. The problem is that everything fun around here just happends to be illegal, and there is also big fines if you get caught. Allthough it is alot of public roads going up north along the coastline, these are mostly paved. But if you do want to explore Norway from a car, that is probably the best way to go. Taking the E-39 from Stavanger or Bergen and follow it up to Molde. You will probably see more strange roads and ferrys on this trip than most people see in a lifetime:) Take the time to visit Trollstien (Trolls Path) http://www.panoramio.com/photo/1006281 and Atlanterhavsveien (Atlantic Ocean Road) http://www.panoramio.com/photo/73034
Just bring alot of extra money for the ferrys and toll, and youll be allright

Welcome!

Avoid all tunnels. There is allways a road around, and those roads can be nice to drive...

Hi!
We have been several times in Norway, with the same ideas. We discovered that it is forbidden to go offroad, but there are so many nice roads if you go not only for the main roads. Nature is so beautiful, it is a wonderfull experience. I hope to go again this summer to.

Most people in Norway speak/understand/write english pretty good.
Maybe "Pirate4x4 Jamboree" can be something you want to experience?
This take place outside "Arendal"....approx. 450 km south of Bergen, and you can drive along the coastline down there.

Most of all....buy a GOOD map, so you have the possibility to discover those small road.
They are present, but not so visible (everybody is in a hurry these days) so keep your eyes open for those old/hidden treasures

Have a nice trip, and remember...lights on your car is prohibited AT ALL TIMES while driving

And of course, drive at the right hand side of the road

I would suggest taking the time to drive riksveg 63 between Åndalsnes in Rauma and Langevatn in Skjåk. That road was a part of the famous Golden Route, and passes Geirangerfjorden, Trollstigen, Ørnevegen, Dalsnibba and a ferryride on Norddalsfjorden. The road is about 100km, with amazing scenery.

View from Dalsnibba
Driving off road is strongly prohibited, and that is a thorn in the eye for most of us in this forum. We are offroaders, not hikers

As mentioned, get a good map, and have some cash laying around in your car for ferrys and toll booths. Dont be afraid to talk to people as you go, they know all those "hidden" treasures. You can also use this forum, our members are scattered across the entire country.
Have a nice trip!
*Edit* Perphaps i should correct Rocker a bit. Lights on your car is not prohibited, it is mandatory. A little translation slip there Rocker?
