Copied from the old forum,

Having had virtually every problem with the fuel system, I've written the following to help anyone suffering fuel smell problems. This applies to the fuel system in the 1.7i Niva but I understand that the 1.6 system is similar in some respects, albeit a bit simpler with fewer components.

The Niva fuel system is pressurised and has a fuel vapour venting system. Any splits/holes in any component of the system will cause a fuel smell, the worst culprit being fuel leaking around the fuel sender on top of the tank. I describe all of the common problems and how to fix them below. I assume your car is a 1.7i, not an earlier 1.6 carburettor version. Also, since the fuel tank is inside the car (in order to protect it) under the rear passenger seat, any leaks will be much more obvious.

For a diagram of the system, see GadgetBoys website : www.turbo-nutter.com, download the 'Colour Exploded drawings' from the link at the bottom and look at page 36 which shows all of the components I mention below or see the attached picture.

The following are the most common symptoms and causes as I understand them. It is worth checking everything since it is common for more than one thing to be wrong :

1. Check if the soundproofing in the rear passenger footwell smells of / is soaked with fuel or if the bitumen underneath is soft. If so, then fuel is probably leaking from around the fuel sender and seeping under the carpet; to check, remove the rear seat and carpet, remove the rear side trim panel and then remve the entire cover that sits on top of the tank. Look at the area around the fuel sender. If there is little or no paint or noticeable 'dribble' marks around it then fuel has been leaking round the rubber seal, even if it looks dry on inspection; remove the sender and replace the rubber gasket. The sender should be secured with all the nuts with a small washer under each nut. I would also recommend using a thin coating of 'instant gasket' when you replace it. You can get a new gasket from Alan Bird (number at the top of this forum).

2. Look at the small pipes that exit at the top of either end of the tank and connect to the black plastic 'bottle' in the wing which is the fuel vapour separator. These get hard over time and often split causing fuel smells. You can replace these with 6mm flexible rubber hose from a motor factor or some other thin tubing that is resistant to petrol. Use a hairdryer to heat up the old tubes where they connect to the tank and vapour separator to soften them so you can remove them more easily to avoid snapping the connectors on the fuel separator.

3. The plastic vapour separator in the wing (27) is often poorly moulded or may have split under pressure. Remove it (taking care not to snap the connectors off) and test for leaks by sealing 2 openings with your fingers and blowing in the other while it is in a bucket of water. If you see bubbles, it's leaking! Either get a replacement (from Alan) or you could try repairing the split / hole by carefully melting it together with a soldering iron.

4. Under the rear drivers side panel you will also find two plastic one-way valves (28, 30). Make sure that they are the right way round and that you can blow through them.

- 30 should be open towards the metal rollover valve (29)
- 28 should be open towards the fuel filler

One of them (2Cool is adjustable; if it is really hard to blow through you can remove the cap on the end and loosen the screw to ensure it vents at a lower pressure. Make sure you put it back on the corect way round.

The rollover valve should be open when rightway up and closed when upside down. Mine didn't work so I ordered a replacement from Alan.

5. Check that the fuel filler and vent pipes are tight and sealed. Each should have a jubille clip at the top and the bottom.
