Here's the scoop on gearing -
1. For the Gen I, the axles come stock with 4.625's. There are maybe only 10 sets or less of 5.29's still available (factory gears) through Japan via Australia. The 5.29 gears were installed in the diesel versions available overseas. Mr. Bishi is the contact for these.
2. I am not aware of any 4.88's available for the Gen I's with the V6. The Gen I w/ V6 uses a larger front & rear diff than the Gen I w/ the 4. I understand some high altitude versions of the Gen I w/ 4 had 4.88's.
3. The Gen II SR model w/ 3.0 V6 came with 4.88's. The Gen II w/ 3.0 V6 had the same size rear diff, but those with an auto had the same size front diff as the 2.6 4 cyl. The Gen II have reverse cut gears where the Gen I had normal cut. The Gen II SR w/ 3.5 V6 had the same size front diff as the Gen I but again was reverse cut. These also came with only 4.625's.
4. 5.29's are available for the Gen II's w/ the 3.0 V6 & auto thru Mitsubishi in Australia and 4.90's are available for the Gen II's w/ 3.5 V6 here in the US. These were installed in some Montero Sports.
5. Mr. Bishi in Australia had some custom 2.85 Tcase gears cut and they are currently installed in Lloyd Swartz's Gen I, which has 35's, 5.29's, & the Tcase gears. Lordtrunks (Patrick I believe is his name) also has a Tcase equipped with the 2.85's. Mr. Bishi hopes to make another production run sometime later this fall. Don't know if his plans have changed since his recent bad luck.
Hope this helps some. Mitsubishi really mixed & matched diff sizes, which makes gearing options confusing. Also, the lack of aftermarket gearing doesn't help the situation. I'd say that if you really want something like 4.88's or 4.90's, you might have to look into the possibility of swapping axles, besides just gearing.
