About Suburban & lastbilen
#1
Since I´m able to communicate only in english... could you tell me:
In what category you can register Suburban in Norway?

In Sweden & Finland it can be Lastbil ( light truck ) totalweight at least 3500kg or Personbil ( suv ) and totalweight under that 3500kg.

Yearly tax in both countries is ~1600kr/(170e)/year in light truck category.

You can register a Suburban as an 3 seat Lastebil (truck) total weight must be abowe 7500 kg ! this car cost about 450 000 - 500 000 NKR.

You can register an suburban as an "Kombinert" car with 5 seats this car cost approximately 900 000 NKR.

You can also register an suburban as a personbil (suv) but the extra seat will cost you an extra 800 000 NKR. (total cost of an suv with 5 -10 seats will be ca 1 300 000 kr)

The numbers are estimates but feel free to correct me if i am wrong.

Extreme taxes are of course the reason for the unbeliveable prices, to many people are injured in traffic in Norway, by forcing Norwegians to drive small old cars the gowernment hopes more people will be cilled instead.

Hey Blazer, is it the same sitution with older Subs in Norway? Is it impossible to find truck-SUB with older body? After all the prices are quite reasonable.. .

Those prices are for an new Suburban, i guess you dont think 1,3 mill NKR (158 000 €) are reasonable...

Older suburbans with diesel engines are quite common and those can be registrated like in Sweden / Finland. Yearly tax is 2400 kr (300€).
(and the diesel costs 1€ /liter)

Well.. are those older Suburbans straight away in truck register in Norway, if there stands combi in the sale ad? Or how you can find it out?

Old bodystyle suburbans (< 91) are usually registered as kombi and can carry 5/6 people, there is then a wall dividing the cargo area and the passanger area. Some of these are above 3,5 tonn and need a higher class printed in the driverslicense. Also they have to be shown "biltilsynet" every year. A lot of them have later changed the loadrating by removing a leafspring in the back and can be driven on a regular license/shown biltilsynet every other year. Rumor has it that you can no longer register them down a class like this, but that does not effect the ones allready registered.

I agree it is a great buy for what it costs for a good Diesel 88-90 model. Get one in good shape, fresh rebuilt pump and gearbox(with documented papers), and if you can perform simple mainteines yourself there is no bether family car.

Great!
Go to www.autodb.no and punch inn suburban <91 and you will get a nice selection ranging from 25 000 NKR to 60 000. Look for the ones registered in the north of Norway, they are not rustet so bad as the ones that have spent their life saltslushing around in the south.

A good buy is when the truck is tecknicaly strong and well maintained, but you have a litle rust inn the fenderwells, rear windows etc. The seller will usually go lower in price, maybe 25-30 000, Get a friend to weld it upp, fixing rust isn't as impossible/expensive as people think.

good luck with it!
